Celebrate the Lunar New Year and the Year of the Rooster with a fun-filled day of cultural activities at the International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) on Saturday, January 28, 2017 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Now in its fifth year, the event seeks to highlight the rich diversity of the Rio Grande Valley’s Asian Community.
Lunar New Year, also called Spring Festival in China, has more than 4,000 years of history. It is the grandest and the most important annual event for many Asian people. The festival is not only observed in mainland China, but also celebrated in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and some other Asian countries such as Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam, and around the world including right here in the Rio Grande Valley. Many unique traditions make this holiday a significant cultural celebration.
This year’s lineup of events will offer visitors a range of fun and family-friendly activities. Guests will have the opportunity to watch the Lion Dance, a form of traditional dance and performance in Chinese culture, try out traditional Asian games, and learn the ancient art of Origami and the basics of calligraphy. Guest will also learn about the Chinese zodiac including tales and legends about the 12 animal signs. Local restaurants will offer traditional Asian cuisine at IMAS. Start the celebration early by stopping at any of three the participating locations (McAllen Library – Main, McAllen Library – Lark, China Café, Dai Tung, Xin-Xin, House of China, Tea Rush) and collect three stickers of will enter to win a prize on January 28 at IMAS.
IMAS would like to extend its sincerest gratitude to Shirley Juan and the Rio Grande Valley Chinese American Association for their support and partnership in the planning of this event. A special thanks to McAllen Public Library – Main and Lark branch, Mary Shingler, Team Tiger, Chipotle, Chili’s, House of China, China Café, Xin Xin, Daitung Chinese Restaurant, and Tea Rush for their generous support to make the event more exciting!
