Ever wonder why some plants have unusual names like Soapberry (Sapidinus saponaria ) or Manzanita ( Arctostaphylos pungens )? Soapberry seeds create a lather when placed in water and agitated. The “little apple” looking berries and leaves of the Manzanita are used in teas for an effective diuretic. Early pioneers used the land and its plants to survive. Today, landscaping with native plants maintains the biodiversity within a habitat. There are many benefits to selecting native plants such as: low maintenance, conserving water and attracting wildlife to mention a few. South Texas native plants are the ecological basis upon which life depends, including birds, butterflies, other animals and people.

Join us at Quinta Mazatlan on Thursday, April 26 at 6pm for a presentation on Many Uses of Native Plants. Mike Heep owner and operator of Heep Nursery will discuss how pioneers used native plants to survive and how best to use native plants in your landscape. Intentional native plant landscaping will increase the chances of birds and butterflies being attracted to your yard. He has been in the nursery business since 1978 and has been growing native plants in South Texas since 1983. Mike studied agriculture and botany in college, his love of plants led him to a successful career in the native plant business.

The Nature Speaker Series takes place on Thursday evenings through May 2018 and is proudly sponsored by Thurmond Eye Associates. The program fee is $3 per person and no advance reservation is required. Quinta Mazatlan is located 600 Sunset in McAllen, one block south of La Plaza Mall on 10th Street.
