The Rio Grande Valley has an extensive history that conveys its ability to perfectly blend two diverse cultural backgrounds. In fact, the peoples of South Texas have so effectively balanced Mexican and American customs that the RGV practically sports its own culture. Local folk participate in traditions and celebrations established long ago and are proof of cultural unity. With a story that goes back several decades and generations, the RGV Livestock Show & Rodeo is a prime example of this.
In 1940, the Mercedes Chamber of Commerce organized a livestock show for residents held at a local sales yard with makeshift pens and sheds. Nearly ten years later, the show moved to its present location at 1000 North Texas in Mercedes. The show soon formed a Board of Directors when it was chartered as a nonprofit, educational organization. By 1979, all exhibits upgraded from their tent coverage to permanent buildings. The Livestock Show holds an impressive list of dedicated local and national sponsors which make the event come to life. Over the years, more than $25 million have been donated to the organization. It is now ranked as one of the top 10 livestock shows in the State of Texas.
