Learn to Fish

Monday & Tuesday | Ages 6–12 | 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM | $15

Session 2: October 12 – November 9

Young anglers can learn the basics of fishing and other outdoor skills in this immersive class. The program includes instruction on fish identification, equipment maintenance, fishing laws, and regulations. Each class includes 30 minutes of instruction followed by 30 minutes of practice.

Intro to Archery

Wednesday & Thursday | Ages 8–12 | $25

5:15 PM – 6:15 PM or 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM

Session 2: October 12 – November 9

Discover the excitement of archery in a safe and supportive environment! Participants learn the basics of proper stance, aiming, and shooting techniques while also learning important equipment and range safety.

Archery Skills Clinic

October 3 and October 24

Kick off your Saturday on target! This 2.5-hour clinic introduces participants to archery basics, including safety, form, and shooting practice. All equipment is provided.

Nature Detectives

Session 2: October 12 – November 9

Kids can become nature detectives through hands-on adventures at Camp McAllen! Participants explore nature, enjoy scavenger hunts, create crafts, play outdoor games, and make exciting discoveries along the way.

McAllen Nature Center offers approximately three-quarters of a mile of walking trails through one of McAllen’s oldest natural habitats. Along the way, visitors can discover birds, butterflies, native plants, insects, and other signs of South Texas wildlife.

Bring your walking shoes, binoculars, or camera and spend some time exploring at your own pace. It’s an easy option for a morning walk, nature photography, birdwatching, or simply enjoying some quiet time outdoors.

For kids who love expressing themselves, Lark Community Center has plenty of opportunities to draw, dance, perform, and build confidence this fall.

Manga Comics & More

Monday & Wednesday | Ages 7–12 | 6:35 PM – 7:20 PM

Kids can create their own masterpieces in cartoon, comic, or anime styles. Each piece is designed to be unique and filled with personality. At the end of each session, parents and children participate in a special art activity, and artwork is displayed at the Lark Art Gala.

Gracious Ballet

Tuesday & Thursday | Ages 3–5: 6:35 PM – 7:05 PM | Ages 6–8: 7:10 PM – 7:55 PM

Young dancers can discover the classic art of ballet while learning positions, coordination, and balance. Each session concludes with a recital where family and friends can watch participants perform. Ballet shoes are recommended.

Cheer & Dance

Learn exciting cheers, chants, and dance routines with experienced instructors. Each session ends with a Cheer & Dance performance for family and friends.

K-Pop at Lark

Kids can learn choreographed dances inspired by popular K-Pop groups, including BTS, Black Pink, Big Bang, and others. The session concludes with a performance for the whole family.

Indoor & Outdoor Rec-Sports

Monday & Wednesday | Ages 3–5: 6:00 PM – 6:30 PM | Ages 6–8: 6:35 PM – 7:20 PM

Kids receive a basic introduction to skills and techniques used in popular sports like baseball, tennis, volleyball, softball, and more. Tennis shoes are required, and equipment is provided, although participants may bring their own gear.

Gymnastics

Kids can learn the basics of this popular Olympic sport while developing their gymnastics skills. Each session ends with a choreographed performance.

Little athletes learn basketball fundamentals including passing, dribbling, and shooting through age-appropriate drills. The session ends with a showcase where participants demonstrate their new skills.

Learn to Swim Programs

McAllen Aquatics offers swim lessons for children, teens, and adults at Municipal Pool and Los Encinos Pool. These programs focus on water safety, confidence-building, and developing swimming skills appropriate for each age group.

Participants are assessed by instructors to ensure they are placed in the appropriate skill level, helping swimmers progress safely and confidently in the water.

Adaptive Aquatics

Adaptive Aquatics classes are available for participants ages 6–17 and are designed to provide a supportive environment where swimmers can develop water skills, confidence, and independence while enjoying the benefits of aquatic recreation.

Lifeguard Certification

Lifeguard Certification

Interested in becoming a certified lifeguard? McAllen Aquatics offers American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification courses designed to prepare participants with the knowledge and skills needed to respond to aquatic emergencies. Training includes instruction in First Aid, CPR, AED usage, oxygen administration, and blood-borne pathogens training. Participants must successfully pass a pre-course swimming skills test before enrolling in the certification program.

Prerequisites

Participants must be able to:

  • Swim 200 yards continuously using either the front crawl or breaststroke.
  • Tread water in deep water without using their hands for 2 minutes.
  • Retrieve a 10-pound dive weight from a depth of 7 feet.
  • Surface dive and swim 20 yards while carrying the weight using legs only.
  • Exit the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds.
