The McAllen Convention Center will celebrate Mexican independence with its annual “El Grito de la Independencia y Feria Artesanal” event on September 14 and 15 2013. The event, which is held in partnership with the Mexican consulate in McAllen, features an assortment of Mexican crafts, candy, music and dance. “El Grito”, or “The Cry”, has been a traditional Mexican event in which participants reenact the cry that called for Mexican independence from the small town of Dolores, near Guanajuato, Mexico. It was in that town on September 16, 1810 that Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Roman Catholic priest, was planning a revolt against the Spanish government. Though Mexican independence would not be official until nearly a decade later, “El Grito” has been celebrated as the call for independence ever since.
