Celebrate National Poetry Month with an enchanting evening where words come alive at Poetry Night / Noche de poesía with Emmy Pérez, TX 2020 Poet Laureate and renowned local author Julieta Corpus.

Emmy Pérez will read poetry from her various publications y compartirá traducciones al español de sus poemas. Emmy Pérez, Texas Poet Laureate 2020, is the author of the poetry collections With the River on Our Face and Solstice. Her latest book Paper America: New and Selected Poems is forthcoming in 2025. Raised in Santa Ana, California, she has lived in the Texas borderlands for the past 24 years. She is a professor of Creative Writing and affiliate faculty in Mexican American Studies at UTRGV. Currently, she holds the Dr. Robert S. Nelsen Professorship in Mexican American Studies 2021-2024.

Julieta Corpus will read from her poetry collection “Of Love and Departures / De amor y despedidas.” Julieta Corpus’ poetry has been included in Waiting To Be Heard:Voces Desde El Chicho & The Texas Poetry Calendar and many other anthologies. She was awarded a Creative Writing Residency in Tasajillo, Texas to translate a collection of short stories by Austin-based poet, Ire’ne Lara Silva. Julieta Corpus writes because her poetry is a scream lodged in her throat that must be freed or it will suffocate her. Julieta has been writing since the age of 11 but did not start publishing until she attended college. Julieta’s first poetry collection titled, “Of Love and Departures / De amor y despedidas,” 2021 is available on Amazon.
